How to Tow a Toyota Highlander

How to Tow a Toyota Highlander

When your Toyota Highlander breaks down or runs out of gas and you don't want to spend the money on a tow truck, you can just have a friend or passerby tow you with a vehicle at least as big as your Toyota Highlander or bigger; such as a truck, SUV or tractor. Towing a vehicle takes a few safety precautions and proper supplies.

Difficulty:
Moderately Easy

Instructions

things you'll need:

  • Tow strap
  • Vehicle/tractor
    • 1

Turn on the hazard lights in the Toyota Highlander if there is any battery life left.

    • 2

Lie under the front end of the Toyota Highlander with the tow strap.

    • 3

Wrap the strap around one end of the axle. Avoid wrapping it around any hoses or cords traveling to the tire. Wrap it strictly around the center steel axle arm. Hook the tow strap over itself once you have wrapped it around the front axle of the Toyota Highlander.

    • 4

Repeat step 3 on the rear axle of the towing vehicle.

    • 5

Get in the Toyota Highlander. Turn on the key. Press in the brake and shift it into neutral.

    • 6

Allow the towing vehicle to pull slowly forward until the strap is tight between the vehicles.

    • 7

Let off the brake in the Toyota Highlander and let the towing vehicle pull you to your destination or auto repair shop.

Tips & Warnings

  • The tow vehicle shouldn't go over 25 mph.

  • Press the brakes slightly while going down hill so you don't roll into the towing vehicle -- your goal is to keep the tow strap tight at all times.
