How to Change a CD Player in a Toyota

How to Change a CD Player in a Toyota

The in-dash CD player has been standard issue on most vehicles for more than 10 years now. But if you own an older vehicle, or if your vehicle only has a radio, you may want to change or install a CD player. In this case, the project vehicle is a 1994 Toyota pickup and an aftermarket CD player.

Difficulty:
Easy

Instructions

things you'll need:

  • Aftermarket wiring harness
  • Phillips head screwdriver
  • 1/4-inch ratchet and sockets
  • Aftermarket dash pocket
  • Wire cutters
  • Wire crimpers
  • Blue butt connectors
    • 1

Remove the trim piece around the factory stereo using a Phillips head screwdriver and the 1/4-inch ratchet. There are a few screws holding it in at the bottom, and clips at the top.

    • 2

Unscrew the factory stereo using the Phillips head screwdriver. The deck is mounted with four screws to the sides of the deck. Unclip the wiring harness and the antenna with your hands at the same time.

    • 3

Unscrew the mounting clips from the stereo using a Phillips head screwdriver. This is an iso-mount stereo system, so no additional dash kit is required.

    • 4

Wire the CD player harness to the aftermarket harness using the blue butt connectors, wire cutters and wire strippers. Each wire is labeled on each harness, so strip the ends of the wires, insert into a butt connector and crimp each wire, one at a time. Be sure each wire is labeled the same.

    • 5

Screw the mounting clips to the side of the new CD player using the screws provided with the CD player and a Phillips head screwdriver. Attach the aftermarket dash pocket to the mounting clips in this same manner.

    • 6

Clip the CD player harness into the back of the CD player and the other end into the factory harness. Attach the antenna into the back of the CD player.

    • 7

Screw the mounting clips and CD player into the dash using the Phillips head screwdriver in the same method it was removed. Reinstall the dashboard trim pieces in the reverse order that you disassembled them.
