How to Replace Rims on the Toyota Corolla

How to Replace Rims on the Toyota Corolla

The Corolla is one of the most popular models that Toyota has ever produced and is known first and foremost for its relatively inexpensive price, good fuel economy and reliability. Most Corollas come with relatively plain wheels from the factory, since more expensive wheels would make the price of the car itself go up. To make their Corolla's look better, many owners install nicer rims.

Determine what style and size of wheel you want. There are many options when it comes to wheels that will fit on the Corolla. If you want to see a wide selection of different wheels, visit an online store that sells wheels (see "Resources") and browse through its selection of wheels until you find a look that you like. Local wheel and tire stores are another good place to the visit so that you can actually see the wheels in person. You can go with a larger diameter and wider wheel, but just keep in mind that you will have to have new tires installed as well.

Order or purchase the wheels you want. Make sure you order the wheels with the correct bolt pattern and offset (where the wheel is located in relation to the suspension) so that they can be installed on your Corolla. Corollas made up to 2002 have a 4x100 bolt pattern, while Corollas made after 2003 have a 5x100 bolt pattern. The store where you buy your wheels will be able to ensure that you buy the proper bolt pattern.

Have new tires installed if you are not using your old tires. It is common for individuals who buy new wheels to also buy a new set of tires for their Corolla. And if you have gone with a larger-diameter, wider wheel you have to install new tires. If you use a new wheel that is the same size as your old wheels then you can use your old tires. Tires should be installed by a professional shop due to the fact that mounting and balancing takes specialty equipment.

Install the wheels on your Corolla. This can be done by the shop where the wheels were bought (unless you bought the wheels through mail order) or can be done by the owner. If you are doing it yourself, start by loosening the lug nuts for the wheels. Raise the vehicle with a floor jack. Finish removing the wheel by removing the lug nuts and then pulling the wheel off of the hub. Install the new wheel on the hub. Tighten the lug nuts. Lower the Corolla to the ground. Finish tightening the lug nuts in a criss-cross pattern. It is recommended (but not necessary) to have the suspension aligned after having new wheels installed.
