Put your key into the ignition to scan the OBD engine codes on your Toyota.

You can read the engine trouble codes on your Toyota right from your home garage, saving yourself time and money. The on-board diagnostics computer reads and stores trouble codes sent to it from sensors positioned throughout the engine. These codes are then turned into warning or service lights that illuminate on the vehicle's instrument panel to alert you of problems. You will need an OBD scan tool to read the codes. The tool can be purchased at any auto parts retailer. Be sure to read the codes and do the repairs before using the scan tool to erase the codes.

Difficulty:
Moderately Easy

Instructions

things you'll need:

  • OBD scan tool
  • Ignition key

Find the port just to the left side of the fuse panel. This should be the same size and shape as the OBD scan tool connector plug.

    • 2

Plug the OBD scan tool into this diagnostic port, but don't force it in. If you do, you might bend some of the pins.

    • 3

Put the key into the ignition and turn it to the "on" position. Take care to not start the engine.

    • 4

Wait for the OBD scan tool to display "OK," then turn off the ignition. Press "Menu" then "Stored Codes.

    • 5

Write down the codes, then look them up in the scan tool's booklet. Unplug the scan tool from the port.
